The Last Invasion Tapestry at Fishguard
The town of Fishguard is proud of its place in history. In 1797 it was scene of the last invasion of Britain, when French troops landed just along the coast at Carreg Gwastad, near Goodwick.
Legend has it that the French surrendered when they mistook a party of Welsh women in traditional tall black hats and red skirts led by Jemima Nicholas, for a contingent of British soldiers. The treaty was signed in the town’s Royal Oak pub.
A tapestry celebrating this momentous occasion hangs in the library in the Town Hall, and is definitely worth a visit. The tapestry depicts the events of 1797 and was embroidered by a group of local women to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the invasion in 1997.
